No experience
First job with no work experience
A school leaver applying for a weekend café job.
Application for Weekend Café Assistant
Dear Mr Daniel Price,
I would like to apply for the Weekend Café Assistant job you posted in your window last week. I am 17, studying for my A levels at Hewett Sixth Form, and I am looking for my first part-time job.
I have not worked in a café yet, but I help run the tuck shop at school twice a week, which means handling cash, keeping the counter clean and serving a long queue in a 20-minute break. I also volunteer every other Saturday at the Lakenham community pantry, where I sort donations and help visitors find what they need. My attendance at school is 98 percent, and I am never late.
I go to The Green Cup with my friends, and I have always liked how your staff remember regular customers. I would enjoy being part of a small team that people come back to.
I am free every Saturday and Sunday, and during school holidays I can work weekdays too. Thank you for reading my letter. I would be glad to come in for a chat or a trial shift whenever suits you.
Yours sincerely,
Ella Thompson
Why it works: With no jobs to point to, it uses school, volunteering and a reliable attendance record as evidence, and keeps the letter short.
Career change
Career change: teacher to learning designer
A secondary teacher moving into corporate training.
Application for Learning Designer
Dear Ms Priya Nair,
I am applying for the Learning Designer role on your careers site. After eight years teaching science, I am moving into workplace learning, and your focus on short, practical training modules is exactly the kind of work I want to do.
Planning lessons is learning design under another name. Every week I turn complex topics into 50-minute sessions with clear outcomes, activities and checks for understanding. Two years ago I rebuilt our Year 10 chemistry unit as a set of short online lessons, and the share of students passing the end-of-unit test rose from 61 to 78 percent. This year I completed a certificate in instructional design and built three sample e-learning modules in Articulate Rise, which you can see on my portfolio site.
I read your blog post about replacing long compliance courses with ten-minute scenarios. That is the approach I took with my students, and I would like to help do the same for your claims and customer teams.
Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome an interview, and I can start after the end of the summer term.
Yours sincerely,
Owen Clarke
Why it works: It translates classroom work into the language of the new field and backs it up with a portfolio and a recent course.
Internal move
Applying for an internal role or promotion
A customer service adviser applying to the complaints team in the same company.
Application for Complaints Resolution Specialist (ref. INT-0391)
Dear Karen Whitfield,
I am applying for the Complaints Resolution Specialist vacancy posted on the intranet. I have worked on the customer service team in Halifax for two and a half years, and I would like to move into a role where I can see difficult cases through to the end.
I already handle many first-stage complaints before they are passed to your team, so I know our billing system, our service standards and the most common causes of escalation. My customer satisfaction score has stayed above 90 percent for the last four quarters, and in March I was asked to coach three new advisers on handling upset callers. I also helped write the new script for leak-allowance calls.
Moving to your team would let me stay with a company I believe in while building the investigation and written-response skills I want to develop. I would also bring the front-line view of what customers tell us before they ever reach complaints.
Thank you for considering me. My manager, Steve Barlow, knows I am applying and is happy to talk to you. I would welcome an interview at a time that suits you.
Kind regards,
Bilal Hussain
Why it works: It uses inside knowledge the outside candidates do not have, and names results the hiring manager can check.
Graduate
Graduate scheme application
A civil engineering graduate applying to a consultancy graduate programme.
Application for Graduate Civil Engineer (Water)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for your 2027 Graduate Civil Engineer programme in the water team. I graduated this summer with a 2:1 in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham, and water infrastructure is the area I most want to work in.
For my final-year project I modelled surface water flooding for a housing estate in Beeston using HEC-RAS and proposed a set of swales and storage ponds. The project received a first. During my 12-week summer placement with a contractor I worked on site on a sewer rehabilitation scheme, checking quantities, taking part in daily briefings and writing site diaries. That placement taught me how design decisions look once they reach the people building them.
Your work on sustainable drainage for the Trent catchment was one of the case studies in my flood risk module, and I like that your graduates rotate between design and site in their first two years. I want that mix while I work towards chartership.
Thank you for considering my application. I am available for interview at any time and could start in September.
Yours faithfully,
Chidi Okonkwo
Why it works: It leads with a relevant final-year project and a placement, which matter more than grades alone.
Remote role
Remote customer support role
An experienced support agent applying for a fully remote job.
Application for Remote Customer Support Specialist (EMEA)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Remote Customer Support Specialist role covering EMEA. I have worked in remote support for three years and I am used to helping customers across several time zones in writing.
At my current company I answer around 60 chat and email tickets a day in Zendesk with an average first response time of under four minutes. Because our team is spread across five countries, almost everything we do is written: handovers, bug reports to engineers and help centre articles. I have written 22 of our help articles, and the most-read one reduced tickets on its topic by about a third. I work from a dedicated home office with a backup internet connection.
I use Parcelwise for my own small online shop, so I know your tracking pages from the customer side. I would like to help other small sellers in the same way your team has helped me.
Thank you for your time. I can work your 08:00 to 17:00 UK shift pattern and I am available to start with two weeks of notice.
Kind regards,
Grace Achieng
Why it works: It proves remote working skills (written communication, self-management, tools) instead of just saying "I work well alone".
Returning to work
Returning after a career break
A payroll officer going back to work after four years caring for her children.
Application for Payroll Administrator (part-time)
Dear Mr Andrew Fox,
I am applying for the part-time Payroll Administrator role advertised on Indeed. I have six years of payroll experience, and after a four-year break to look after my young children I am ready to return to work three days a week.
Before my break I ran the monthly payroll for 350 staff at a care home group, including statutory sick pay, maternity pay and pension auto-enrolment. To make sure my knowledge is up to date, I completed the CIPP Payroll Technician certificate this spring, which covered recent changes to holiday pay and National Insurance. I also kept my hand in by doing the books for my local pre-school.
Your advert mentions flexible hours and a small, friendly finance team. As a housing association you also do work I care about, and I would be proud to make sure your staff are paid accurately and on time.
Thank you for considering my application. I am available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and could start in January. I would welcome the chance to talk.
Yours sincerely,
Sophie Turner
Why it works: It names the gap in one honest sentence, then shows how her skills are current.
Healthcare
Healthcare assistant
A care worker applying for a hospital healthcare assistant post.
Application for Healthcare Assistant, Elderly Care (ref. HCA-1187)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Healthcare Assistant post on the elderly care wards. I have worked in residential care for four years, most recently as a senior care worker, and I want to use my experience in a hospital setting.
I support 12 residents on each shift with personal care, meals, mobility and medication prompts, and I record observations on our digital care system. I hold the Care Certificate and Level 3 in Health and Social Care, and I am trained in moving and handling and basic life support. Last winter I noticed one resident was more confused than usual and had stopped drinking, raised it with the nurse, and she was treated early for an infection. Small changes like that are what I look out for.
Your trust has a strong reputation for dementia-friendly wards, and I would like to keep learning from specialist nurses while giving patients the same dignity I aim for now.
Thank you for considering my application. I can work days, nights and weekends, and I am happy to provide references from my current manager.
Yours faithfully,
Joseph Adeyemi
Why it works: It is warm but specific: real tasks, training and a short story that shows judgement.
Office and admin
Administrative assistant
A receptionist moving up to an admin role in a law firm.
Application for Legal Administrative Assistant
Dear Mrs Helen Jones,
I am applying for the Legal Administrative Assistant role advertised on your website. I have two years of front-desk and admin experience at a busy accountancy practice, and I would like to move into a legal setting.
Your advert asks for diary management, document preparation and close attention to detail. I manage the diaries of four partners, book around 30 client meetings a week and prepare engagement letters from templates in Word. I also set up a simple checklist for new client files that the practice now uses as standard, because missing ID documents kept holding up our work.
I have read about your free legal clinic for tenants in Splott. I like working for a business that is part of its community, and I am keen to learn about property and housing law.
Thank you for reading my application. I would welcome an interview and can give one month of notice.
Yours sincerely,
Megan Price
Why it works: It matches each line of the job ad (diary, documents, accuracy) with a concrete example.
Tech
Junior software developer
A bootcamp graduate with one year of experience applying for a junior developer job.
Application for Junior Software Developer
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Junior Software Developer role on your team building the patient booking app. I have a year of professional experience with TypeScript and React, and I want to work on software people rely on every day.
At my current agency I build and maintain features for three client web apps. Recently I traced a slow search page to a missing database index and a component that re-rendered on every keystroke; after my fix the page loaded in under a second instead of four. I write tests for my own code and review pull requests from other juniors. My side project, a bus arrival app for my area, has about 300 weekly users, and the code is on my GitHub.
Your engineering blog post about making the booking flow accessible for screen reader users stuck with me. I have been learning about accessibility myself and would like to do that work properly on a team that takes it seriously.
Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome a technical interview and I am happy to talk through any of my code.
Kind regards,
Arjun Mehta
Why it works: It shows working code and a real fix, not a list of languages.
Sales
Sales executive
A retail supervisor moving into business-to-business sales.
Application for Business Development Executive
Dear Mr Lee Carter,
I am applying for the Business Development Executive role listed on LinkedIn. I have spent four years selling in a high-street electronics store, and I am ready to build longer relationships with business customers.
As a supervisor I lead a team of six and have beaten my store’s monthly sales target in 10 of the last 12 months. I set up a business accounts desk for local firms buying laptops in bulk, which now brings in around £18,000 a month from 25 regular customers. I am comfortable with cold calls, follow-ups and keeping a CRM up to date, because I already do all three.
Many of my business customers are small offices that would also buy their supplies from a company like yours. I understand what they need, and I like that your sales team is rewarded for keeping customers rather than only winning new ones.
Thank you for your time. I would welcome the chance to discuss the role and I am available for interview on any weekday.
Yours sincerely,
Kwame Asante
Why it works: It leads with numbers, which is what sales managers look for first.
