How to choose a cover letter design
Your cover letter and CV are read together, so they should look like a set: same colour, same fonts, same header. The quickest way is to pick the design named after your CV, or press "Copy CV design" in the builder. If your CV is plain, keep the letter plain too. A busy letter next to a simple CV looks unplanned.
Match the design to the employer. Simple designs, such as Classic, Harvard or Classic Right, are safest for banks, law firms, the civil service and most large companies. Modern designs with a colour band or column suit most private-sector jobs. Creative designs with patterns or gradients work for design, media, fashion and marketing roles, where showing a bit of style helps.
What every design includes
- A4 and US Letter sizes, with margins that print well.
- Your details at the top, the date, the recipient and a subject line, in the order employers expect.
- A drawn or uploaded signature, with an optional signature line, place and date.
- Text you can edit freely, and a text-based PDF that applicant tracking systems can read.
Not sure what to write? The cover letter builder asks a few questions and builds the letter from your answers, and the examples show finished letters for common jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Are these cover letter templates free?
Yes. Every design is free to use, edit and download as a PDF with no watermark. Downloading just needs a free account.
Will my cover letter match my CV?
Yes. Many designs are named after a CV design and use the same colours and fonts. In the cover letter builder, "Copy CV design" gives your letter the same look as the CV saved in your browser in one click.
Can I change the design after writing my letter?
Yes. Your text stays exactly as it is when you switch designs, so you can try several and keep the one you like.
Which design should I choose?
For banks, law, government and most corporate jobs, pick a Simple design. Modern designs suit most private-sector roles. Keep Creative designs for design, media and marketing jobs, or when your CV uses the same look.
Can I sign my cover letter?
Yes. You can draw your signature with your finger or mouse, or upload a photo of it, and add the place and date under it.
