A recruiter spends seconds on a first pass, and many large employers filter resumes through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a person sees them. A good template helps on both counts: clear headings a parser recognizes, and a layout that puts your most recent job and your results where the eye lands first.
Most students and early-career applicants should fit on one page. Pick a template with comfortable density, such as Atlas, and cut anything older than ten years or unrelated to the job. With a longer career, a two-page resume is normal; compact layouts such as Tally keep it from spilling onto a third page. The builder's live preview shows the page breaks exactly as they will appear in the PDF.
Two-column templates look modern and fit more on a page, and current ATS software reads most of them. But some older systems still read straight across the page and jumble the sidebar into your job history. If you are applying through a large company's careers site, a single column is the low-risk choice. Not sure? Download your PDF and run it through our free ATS resume checker to see the text a parser extracts.

A single-column template with standard headings, such as Linden, Summit or Inlet. 50 of our templates are marked ATS-friendly. Two-column designs usually parse well in modern systems, but a single column removes the risk.
One page if you have less than about ten years of relevant experience, two pages if you have more and every line is relevant. Academic and federal resumes are the main exceptions and can be longer.
Yes. Every template works without a photo, and in the US and Canada you should leave it off. Templates designed around a photo still look complete when you switch it off in the builder.
Yes. Canadian resumes follow almost the same rules as US ones: no photo, one or two pages, Letter paper. Add a languages section if you speak French, since bilingual skills matter to many Canadian employers.
Yes. Your content is saved separately from the design, so you can switch between all the templates in the builder at any time without retyping. You can also change the accent color, font size and spacing.
