Cover letters

A good cover letter is one page that names the job, proves you can do it with two or three real examples, and says why you want to work there. Use the free builder to write yours, borrow structure from our examples, or read the guides first.

Where to start

  • Writing your first cover letter? Read how to write a cover letter, then open the builder.
  • Short on time? Find the example closest to your situation and load it into the builder.
  • Applying in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India? Many employers expect the formal application letter layout.
  • Not sure about layout or length? The cover letter format diagram shows what goes where.

Why your letter should match your CV

A hiring manager often opens your CV and cover letter side by side. When both use the same header, font and colour, your application looks finished and deliberate. Each style in the builder is based on one of our free CV templates, and if you have made a CV with CompleteCV in this browser, the builder can copy your details and pick the matching style for you.

No AI writes your letter. You get prompts and example text for every paragraph, and the words stay yours, which is what makes a letter believable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a cover letter?

Send one whenever the job ad asks for it, and consider one when it is optional, especially if you are changing career, moving city, returning after a break or applying to a small employer. A short, specific letter explains what a CV cannot.

What is the difference between a cover letter and an application letter?

They do the same job. "Cover letter" is the usual term in the UK, US and Europe. "Application letter" is common in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India, where a more formal block format with both addresses is often expected.

Is the cover letter builder really free?

Yes: writing, previewing, the PDF download and copying the text are all free. No watermark; you just need a free account to download.
