Teacher resume example
A strong teacher resume leads with your license and experience, then proves your impact with classroom results such as reading growth, behavior data and programs you started. Here is a complete free example for an elementary teacher with seven years of experience, with notes on every section.

Full size Why this example works
- The summary leads with the license, years of experience and one hard number on student progress.
- Bullets show results (reading scores, fewer office referrals), not a list of everyday teaching duties.
- Licenses and certifications sit in their own section where a principal or HR screener expects them.
- Skills use the language of school job postings: PBIS, IEPs, guided reading, i-Ready.

Section by section: how this resume is built
What each part of the example does, and how to write yours.
-
Header and title
Use the grades or subject you teach in your title. A principal hiring a fourth-grade teacher scans for that first. Include a phone number you answer during the school day or can call back from at lunch.
From the example Elementary School Teacher (Grades 2 to 5)
-
Summary: license, experience, proof
Open with your license or certification and years in the classroom, add one measurable result, and finish with how you run a classroom. Mention the setting you know (Title I, rural, bilingual, special education inclusion) if the school is similar.
From the example In my current fourth-grade class the share of students reading at grade level rose from 58% to 74% in two years.
-
Experience: results, not duties
Everyone knows a teacher plans lessons and grades work. Use your bullets for the things that make you different: test score growth, behavior changes, programs you started, colleagues you lead or mentor. Name the school and district, and give class size and student needs in the first bullet.
From the example Cut office referrals from my classroom by more than half in one year after introducing a class job system and daily morning meetings.
-
Education
List degrees in reverse order with the institution and year. A master’s degree often moves you up the salary schedule, so make it easy to see. Student teaching can go under education or experience; after a few years in the classroom it can go entirely.
From the example Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction
-
Licenses and certifications
Give the exact name of each license, the issuing state agency, grade range and endorsement areas. Add CPR, ESL, gifted or reading endorsements. If your license is pending or from another state, say so plainly ("reciprocity application submitted, July 2026").
From the example English as a Second Language (K-12) add-on license, NC Department of Public Instruction
-
Skills and awards
Use the terms the district uses: its behavior framework, reading curriculum, assessment platforms and learning management system. One or two awards are plenty; a school-level Teacher of the Year still counts.
From the example Data-driven planning (i-Ready, mCLASS)
Common mistakes, and what to write instead
Avoid:"Planned and delivered engaging lessons aligned to state standards."
Instead:"Raised the share of students meeting grade level on the end-of-grade reading test from 58% to 74% over two years."
Avoid:A teaching philosophy paragraph at the top of the resume.
Instead:Keep your philosophy for the cover letter or interview. Use the summary for facts.
Avoid:Listing every professional development session you attended.
Instead:Two or three trainings that match the school’s priorities, or none at all.
Avoid:Student names, photos of students or identifiable details.
Instead:Describe classes in numbers only ("a class of 24, including six multilingual learners"). Protect student privacy.
Avoid:Hiding a license that is about to expire or is from another state.
Instead:State the status and the date clearly. HR will check it either way.
Adapting this example
New teachers
Put education and your license first, then student teaching as your main experience with three or four detailed bullets: the grade, the units you planned, the lead-teaching weeks and any results. Add substitute teaching, tutoring, camp counseling or paraprofessional work below it.
Middle and high school teachers
Lead with your subject and endorsement ("Secondary Mathematics, Grades 6 to 12"). Results can include course pass rates, AP exam scores, or the number of students in a club or team you coach. Coaching and club sponsorship matter to principals, so give them their own short section.
Teaching in the UK
Call it a CV, use A4 and British spelling, and put Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and your Enhanced DBS check near the top. Use UK terms: year groups and key stages (Key Stage 2 covers ages 7 to 11) instead of grades, and SEND and EHCPs instead of special education and IEPs. See our CV examples page for other UK conventions.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a teacher resume be?
One page for new teachers and up to two pages for experienced teachers, especially if you have leadership roles, extra licenses or coaching duties. Many districts also ask for an application form, so keep the resume focused.
Where do I put my teaching license?
In a "Licenses and Certifications" section near the top, or directly under your summary if the job posting requires a specific license. Include the state, the license area and grade range, and the expiry date if it is close.
How do I show results as a teacher?
Compare before and after: test scores, reading levels, attendance, behavior referrals, the number of students reaching a benchmark, or parent engagement. Use your own class data and round honestly.
Should a teacher resume include references?
Not on the resume. US school districts usually collect references through their online application system. Prepare your principal, a mentor teacher and a colleague in advance.
